It depends..on the type of smell?
The vagina has a natural odour due to normal secretions
FOul smelling, fishy odour + discharge usually points to an infection.. complications depend on the the cause and how spread. Most common cause is fungal: thrush. But there are bacterial causes as well such as trichimoniasis.
Treatment is available for most causes of vaginosis, but would require testing first (high vaginal swab), urine sample and blood tests. Remember to inform your sexual partner, in case of STI, both have to be treated.
A change in vaginal smell can be due to hormonal changes or infection, a foul smell and accompanied by discharges on most occasions is due to infections. Like Jacky said a test is needed to confirm this, meanwhile, perineal area hygiene is recommended.
